Quality of life is said to be intrinsically interlinked with the process of urbanization and
development, because urbanization is regarded as the manifestation of economic development.
'QoL' refers to the general wellbeing of individuals and societies and 'basic amenities' refer to those
requirements which are necessary for anyone's daily life and has unambiguous relation with QoL.
Urban West Bengal is facing an acute scarcity in the provision of basic civic amenities for its
growing urban population. This is primarily the cult of rapid urbanization, insufficient economic
development and fast immigration from rural areas etc. The main thrust of the present study is to
analyze the QoL in terms of select basic amenities available to the households in West Bengal. In
addition to this, the present paper also examines the regional imbalances in the levels of select
amenities in the urban areas across the districts in West Bengal for the latest Census. Here seven
important basic amenities are taken into consideration. Evidence indicates a marked regional
disparity in the levels of amenities across districts in the state is a leading challenge in urban
development.
