The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence of obesity in 7 to 12 year-old students and find its relationship with blood pressure. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 795 students aged 7-12years were assessed over a period of 6 months. Multi stage stratified cluster random sampling was used for choosing the sample. These children were subjected to a complete anthropometric and Blood Pressure measurement. Descriptive data were expressed as mean values for continuous variables. Student’s t-test was used to compare differences in variables. The effect of BMI on SBP and DBP was investigated using ANOVA. BMI and blood pressure correlation has been reported by using Pearson correlation. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant in all analyses. Results: Age of the children ranged from 7 to 12 years with a mean of 9.67 ± 1.55 years. Obesity & overweight prevalence according to CDC criteria 9.7%&9.8%. The mean values of BMI, systolic BP and Diastolic BP were 17.3±3.4 kg/m2, 90.7±11.9 mmHg and 77.4±12.3 mmHg respectively. There was no significant difference between boys and girls in terms of BMI, sys BP and diastolic BP. However, both for boys and girls mean of BMI, SBP and DBP increases with age (p value <0.001). This change in the girls was more than the boys (p<0.001). Conclusion: This data can provide basis for public health policy makers to estimate the risk of cardiovascular disease through BMI and BP estimates of children and adolescence.
