The purposes of this study were to determine farmers’ knowledge level on modern rice cultivation and to
explore relationships of 9 selected characteristics of farmers with their knowledge level. Data were
collected from a sample of 139 rice farmers of 6 villages from Angaria union of Dumkiupazila under
Patuakhali district. The knowledge scores of the farmers ranged from 29 to 70 with a mean of 46.51 and
34.6 percent of the farmers had low knowledge compared to 66.2 percent having moderate knowledge and
5 percent high knowledge. Among the practices, the knowledge of farmers in quality seed ranked 1st
followed by spacing (2nd), number of seedling per hill (3rd), transplanting time (4th), age of seedling (5th) ,
storage (6th), nitrogen fertilizer (7th), harvesting (8th), insect pest control (9th), variety (10th), potash
fertilizer (11th), weeding (12th) , and phosphorus fertilizer (13th). Five out of nine characteristics namely
education, family size, organizational participation, communication exposure, and economic motivation
of the farmers had significant positive relationship with their knowledge. Only annual family income of
the farmers had significant negative relationship to their knowledge. The other three characteristics
namely age; family size and training experience had no significant relationship with their knowledge on
modern rice cultivation.
