Medicines derived from plant parts nowadays give an alternative source of remedies for microbial infections. The present study was concerned with the evaluation of antibacterial activity of flower extract of Callistemon linearis with isolation and characterization of responsible active ingredients. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against twelve pathogenic bacteria by standard procedure. Diameter of Zone of Inhibition and Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations were compared with commercially available standard antibiotics. Thin Layer Chromatography of the solvent extract, phytochemical analysis, FT-IR and GC-MS analyses were also carried out by standard protocol for identification of bioactive compound/s. All the experiments were repeatedly done. Methanolic and aqueous extracts of Callistemon linearis flowers showed notable zone of inhibition against the used bacteria with maximum effect against Bacillus subtilis by methanolic extract. Phytochemical analyses and FT-IR analysis showed presence of various functional groups in the methanolic extract. From the GC-MS data, secondary metabolite, Dibutyl phthalate was detected, which is remarkably active against tested bacteria and showed MIC values at the concentration of 25-50 µg/ml. This study highlights broad spectrum antibacterial activity of C. linearis against disease causing bacteria. In near future, from its isolated secondary metabolites, new drug formulations against selected bacteria are possible
