The process of farming production, in general, has proved increasingly dynamic and agile, therefore, farmers have to adapt to new production models. These processes require difficult decisions. When seeking to improve and to innovate farm work with more sustainable alternative production systems like ecological basis food, potato production requires proper management in all phases. To illustrate these aspects a study about potato production systems developed by family farmers was conducted in the municipality of São Lourenço do Sul/RS/Brazil, on ecological basis, and in the municipality of Sanlúcar de Barrameda/Cádiz/Spain, on conventional basis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the socioeconomic and cultural significance of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) to those municipalities, to analyze marketing channels and their organization, as well as, the importance of potato in generating economic growth and local and regional development.
