The units of rural production structured on the family work in the process of development of Brazilian capitalism, had suffered movement of expansion and shrinkage according to certain economic situations. This process of technological modernization of agriculture, for these farmers was different, depending on the regions, strata area and types of crops grown. The family farmers who have not been priced out of this process developed themselves subordinated to a concentrated structure of the land property and of the markets in Brazil. The rural family production units, due to the expansion of capitalism in the countryside, needed to adapt and reorganize their activities to keep existing and producing on land. In this reorganization of its activities, they went through a combination of agricultural and non-agricultural activities. From this context emerged multi-activity, with a big spatial and social diversity. In this study, multi-activity is represented by the craft as a form of strategy to reproduce family farming. The main purpose of this work is to characterize the family farming community of Vila Progresso, which belongs to the municipality of Caçapava do Sul - RS, trying to focus it alongside the development of other activities: the crafts. It was tried to observe the community as a whole, ie, since community life, craft activities, the culture of land and labor relations.
