Antioxidant potential of free diterpenes cafestol and kahweol rich extractives of coffee beans

Cafestol and kahweol are reported to have both adverse and chemoprotective properties. Free diterpenes cafestol and kahweol containing extractives from coffee beans were evaluated for their antioxidant potential and cell toxicity. Free diterpenes rich fractions of both arabica and robusta coffee beans and also standards of cafestol and kahweol showed moderate to significant free radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation inhibition along with no cell toxicity. The outcome of this study, provided protective effects of both cafestol and kahweol.
