Mode of action of herbicides and recent trends in development: A Reappraisal

Mode of action is the overall manner in which an herbicide affects a plant at the tissue or cellular level. Herbicides with the same mode-of-action will have the same translocation (movement) pattern and produce similar injury symptoms. Selectivity on crops and weeds, behaviour in the soil and use patterns are less predictable, but are often similar for herbicides with the same mode-of-action. In recent past due to the development of herbicide resistance in weeds the overall scenario has been changed. Herbicide resistance is the inability of an herbicide to effectively control a weed species that was previously controlled by the same herbicide. Therefore we require new herbicides having new or target specific mode of action like: Dihydropteroate Synthetase Inhibitors, Mitosis Inhibitors, Isoprenoid biosynthesis Inhibitors, Hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase inhibitors. A next-generation herbicide that provides better efficacy on most broadleaf weed species and an outstanding environmental profile, thanks to advanced weed control technology.
