The aim of the journal, founded in 1940 as "Annali Di Microbiologia Ed Enzimologia", is the advancement and dissemination of information describing all aspects of microbiology: general, environmental (marine and soil), ecological, applied, food, industrial and cultural heritage microbiology, concerning taxonomy, physiology, biochemistry, biotechnology and molecular biology.
