The powerful emergence and global spread of antibiotic resistant microbial pathogens and resistance genes in the 1990s presents challenges to a wide range of disciplines - from the molecular biology of resistance mechanisms, virulence genes, and disease through molecular epidemiology all the way to drug design, infection control, and medical practice.
